glossary of key words
It would be hard to rate any Select Small Hotel on a points or star basis as they are all unique and offer a wide variety of experiences. In order to better describe our members’ unique qualities we have adopted the use of some “key words” rather than a rigid rating system. We have chosen words from the following list that will quickly express each property’s style, location and “feel”. We are sure that these “key words” will allow you to choose the hotel that’s just right for you.
Style
Luxurious
Opulent, extravagant, gorgeous, sumptuous
Sophisticated
Subtle, delicate, fine, polished, refined, tasteful
Simple Elegance
Tasteful, elegantly casual, uncluttered, fashionable
Casual
Relaxed, comfortable, informal, laid-back
Historic
Decorated and furnished according to its architecture and history. Usually near an historic
site.
Rustic
Provincial, simple, unpolished, employs natural materials such as wood and stone
Basic
Unspoiled; primitive; may have limited services (electricity, television, telephones), may use solar panels; candles and torches for lights
Location
City
Located in a city or town, close to nearby attractions and amenities that would be expected in such a location
Beach
On or near an ocean beach that may or may not be developed with amenities.
Lake/Riverside
By a river or lake with related recreational opportunities. May or may not be near a city or town.
Rural
In a smaller community or in the country, may be relatively isolated. Usually close to local attractions.
Highlands
Highland areas usually offer cooler climates and nature oriented activities.
Jungle
In a rain or cloud forest with an emphasis on nature.
Feeling
Spacious
Oversized bedrooms, roomy common areas, open airy feeling
Detailed
Outstanding detail in the architecture, interior design and/or landscaping
Traditional
Warm, hospitable, friendly atmosphere of a traditional country inn
Eclectic
Reflecting the owner’s taste, diverse yet inclusive in design, perhaps a bit eccentric
Secluded
Isolated, remote, off the beaten track, in an outlying area
Modern
Modern furniture, furnishings and décor.
